Mrthe, Definitely not horrible for someone new.
My guess is you are going -cutting too deep. This causes alot of problems for control etc.
First, make absolutely sure your graver is sharp and the point is good. Sometimes hard to tell the condition of the point even with a 10x loupe.
I can take a perfectly sharpened graver and damage the the point in in one second. So just because you just sharpened it, doesn't mean it is still sharp.
My tendency is to go deep when the graver is not right to compensate.
A good test to see if the graver point is good is to try to make a very fine light straight hairline. If you can't do that, the graver point is probably damaged, even if you can't see anything wrong with it.
Then learn to pick out when the graver point is damaged when looking at it with a good 10x loupe. If you are not used to using a loupe it can be hard to really see and analyze. Does take some time to develop -train your eyes to see under strong magnification.
I am a watchmaker, and used to working under magnification. Also good at sharpening gravers for lathe work. But for engraving gravers the standard is alot higher. I am embarrassed to say it took me over 5 years of fooling around trying to learn engraving before I learned what I said above.
Try the same exact same design again and see if it is better.

That looks pretty nice for starters

Whats that metal..looks like brass or is it the lighting?
If it is brass you might be better off trying on something else as that can be abit unhelpful.

The one that I have marked in the attached picture. I doesn't seem to fit in with the rest of the scrolls.

Nice ring it has an unusual shape which gives it originality.
