I've been keeping an eye out for inexpensive (if not downright cheap) knives to practice on. I figure if it's cheap enough it won't matter if I mess it up because it'll have been worth the small cost for the practice.

Cabelas had a Winchester Commemerative knife for only $5 on a pre-Christmas sale so I figured it would do the trick.

I tried a couple of things on the shading on the front. Fine lines following the contours I like, but trying to do it with the same (Lindsay Universal) graver didn't work out for me - could not keep the lines fine enough. Ah well, that's why it's practice.

On the back side I wisely switched to a proper shading graver. In this case, the 70 degree 'Phill Coggan' point. Great fine lines with it. :thumbsup: I also switched shading styles to more of a line-art style where all the lines are (theoretically) parallel.

Now to try out Steve's nifty new picture handling capabilities he's just added. If I fail, there's a gallery on my site here

Hi SVD,
Nice litle knife.
It brings back to mind that I had a similar knife but about 4 inches long when closed. In 1991 I remember engraving it with a push graver on my formal girlfriends parents kitchen table. I am stil sorry I lost that knife a few years later. Not because of the engraving but because I had that knife since I was 13 years of age :-(

Hi everyone, Im Tony from Birmingham, really glad to find this forum. Just started to get into a sort of engraving mainly on brass and bronze tattoo machines, but obviously need alot of help, so im preparing myself for alot of reading before i start asking questions that have already been answered. On what i have read and seen so far it looks that i will be on here most nights...regards Tony

I think that's the link I posted in response to someone else's link to some nice 'practice plate knives'. I picked up another one for my TBE (To Be Engraved) pile at a gun show this past weekend.
