Texas noob looking to start!
I'm really into guns, and thought it would b cool to do my own stuff. Obviously I don't plan on being a pro right away. I'm looking for advice on equipment to purchase to get started. My grandfather was a jeweler and did engraving. Unfortunately he passed before any knowledge could b shared and no one else in the family took up the art. I do have a few of the guns he owned that he engraved his name and years into. Any help would b appreciated!

Welcome to the Engraving Forum. Gun engraving is a specialized field.I would advise you not to try engraving the guns until you have acquired a good command of general engraving first. I can suggest you learn engraving and the basics of engraving designs. http://www.engravingschool.com/ All the tools are listed on the Engraving Tools page ; http://www.airgraver.com/Hand_Engrav...s_Overview.htm Tools can be acquired as you wish. You could start with the manual tools ,The palm push and the hammer/chisel methods they are ideal to start with or even the airgravers are an excellent choice. http://www.airgraver.com/Hand_Engrav...Graver%20Tools Airgravers; http://www.airgraver.com/Hand_Engrav...graving%20Sets The classic being the ideal choice. You have to read up lots on engraving and even purchase some books and dvds; The Art of Engraving by Mr.J Meeks is one of the best to have. Practise lots of drawing of designs ; http://www.engravingforum.com/showthread.php?t=419 http://www.engravingforum.com/showthread.php?t=2904 If possible start with a starters course of a week or ten days with an engraving school near you ; http://www.engravingclasses.com/ Gun Engraving by Mr.Roland Baptiste is an ideal book for gun engraving in which almost everything is explained; http://www.airgraver.com/Hand_Engrav...rview.htm#BOOK The Glossary will be very useful too for terms used in engraving; http://www.engravingglossary.com/ I wish you all the best SE
