Extreme Newbie
Hello Everyone!
My name is Kirsten Hengstberger. The GRANDbabies call me "Mama Cheez" because they can't quite pronounce "Hengstberger" yet.  So, for some crazy reason, I started experimenting with etching glass with my Dremel tool, which was a hand-me-down from my brother-in-law after he passed away in 2011. Haven't touched the thing until now. I must honestly say, I've been too intimidated to touch it. Recently, I found Lesley Pyke on youtube and became instantly NOT afraid anymore. And, since the fear is gone, I have been doing research and ultimately ended up at this amazing forum. I am so excited to learn everything I can! I am 51 years young and a stay-at-home wife. (And "mama" to five dogs and a cat.) I would ultimately like to make some extra cash, hopefully. What can I learn here? What can y'all teach an ol' dog like me?  PLEASE! DO TELL!! Thanks for letting me be a part of this community!

The one thing you can learn to start with is to dump the Dremel tool and the glass. Neither has anything to do with what is practiced here. Then you will need to acquire a whole nuther set of tools. Take a look at the advice given to the other newbies in the Who's Who forum. They are full of what you are looking for.

Metal and glass can be ground (where the material isn't "cut" but is ground away with a an abrasive like diamond on a rotary bur), however the nature of this method it isn't possible to achieve the same level of detail as a single point graver. A good example of metal being hand engraved with a graver is to look close at the portrait on paper currency.
