Question Where to start?

Im not new to the "idea" of engraving, it would apear that in some ways it is similar to wood relief carving (which im familiar with). However from a technical aspect I have no idea where to begin... I dont have much money to work with so I know i'll have to start small at first, my question is where? What equiptment should i get to start out with, what materials should I practice on, what should I practice to begin with(scrolls, script, hobo knickels?). I've got amazing patience and i'm rediculously fired-up about engraving, so I know once I get started I'll engrave until I die.

Any suggestions and knowlege would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys!

I thought I had replied to this thread already, but I don't see it.

Click on the Engraving Tools link in the header.
Scroll down to books.
Buy John Shipper's book "Engraving Historical Firearms."
It will teach you how to make, sharpen and use your own tools, and is a full fledged engraving course to get low budget beginners on the way.

Hey, Johnny WV
by now you have received John Shipper's book. I purchased mine last year and found it amazing, refreshing, and fascinating, well written, couldn't put the thing down until I read it from cover to cover.
Being in the engraving trade as long as John Shipper, I found myself agreeing with every phase of his work while at the same time picking up several tips. Wish you well! Remember, it's not practice that makes you perfect; it's perfect practice that makes you perfect.
